South Hams District Council

(Off Street Parking Places)(Variation No.1) Order 2021

Statement of Reasons

South Hams District Council proposes to make the above Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and the Traffic Management Act 2004 (and all other enabling powers).

The proposals are to:

To permit overnight camping in Motorhomes in the following car parks:

  • Dartmouth - Park and Ride Car Park

  • Kingsbridge - Quay Car Park (Southern area only) and Cattle Market Car Park

  • Salcombe - North Sands Car Park

  • Totnes - Longmarsh Car Park

  • Ivybridge - Leonards Road Car Park

  • Modbury - Poundwell Meadow Overflow Car Park

  • Slapton and Torcross - Slapton Memorial Car Park and Torcross Tank Car Park (Coach bays marked as being available for Motorhomes only)

The proposed parking charge for overnight (6pm until 9am) in North Sands, Salcombe;

Slapton; and Torcross is £15 per night, with the remaining car parks at £10 per night.

With ever-increasing numbers of motorhomes/campervan users opting to use car parks and other location for overnight stays in the South Hams, these amendments allow overnight sleeping within dedicated off street car parks within the South Hams.

Further conditions applicable to the use of all Parking Places for overnight sleeping include:

  • Maximum permitted stay of two consecutive nights only with a no return within 48 hours;

  • Motorhomes must not exceed a maximum length of 8 metres;

  • The Parking Charge for the appropriate Parking Place as shown above  applies

  • The Driver of a Motorhome must maintain a minimum distance of 6 metres from another Motorhome.
